Introduction to the new sailing season
Published 9:35am on 11 Nov 2024
Dear member,
Happy November and I hope you are all keeping well. The days are now shorter and cooler, but there's certainly a lot of beautiful scenery to enjoy with the autumnal colours on display.
The new 24/25 sailing season is underway, and I hope you will find something to enjoy at Wimbleball in the coming year. Thank you all for your participation at the club over the last year, whether it was sailing, volunteering, or teaching. It was very much appreciated, and the club wouldn't function without all the time and energy you give.
A quick reminder that the Prizegiving for the 23/24 season is on Friday 28 February at the Cosy Club in Taunton.
The sailing programme is on the website please click here to view the Calendar. There are few changes for the season outlined below:
- 1st Sunday of each month we will alternate between a pursuit format and a sprint format (shorter races). These have proved quite popular and, as one member put it, include more of the exciting bits: the start and the corners! This is a good format for new members/improvers or juniors.
- 4th Sunday there's been some demand to see a return of the Personal Handicap, so we will run a series of races in this format. This format works a little bit like golf with higher handicaps in use.
- We will aim to add a little more energy to our Saturday sailing, for example, some BBQs, improver sessions to help newer sailors and combine sailing with a social activity like a walk, cycle or jog (I've noticed an increase in Lycra this year!!). Tbc nearer the time…
You might find it useful to Subscribe to the Wimbleball calendar. There is a Subscribe button on the website which will update your online calendar on your phone or laptop. You need to login to access the subscribe feature but after that it is automatic. A straightforward way to keep up to date with our club events.
A couple of upcoming dates include a chance to win a Christmas Pudding on 15 Dec and some mulled wine and mince pies on Dec 22. Sailing will continue through the autumn and winter in our winter format - 2 races back-to-back from 11.30am. A drysuit or 4mm wetsuit will get you through most of the cooler weather so please come and join us!
As a reminder we have an active WhatsApp group for both Wednesday and weekends. Let me know if you would like a link to join either or both.
All the best,
Nick Ryles
